How this anagram finder works
The Anagram Finder is for exact rearrangements. Type a scrambled word, and the tool normalizes the letters, sorts them into a signature, and compares that signature with words of the same length in the local dictionary. A result only appears when it uses every letter from your input exactly once.
Use this page when a puzzle gives you a fixed set of letters and asks for a word made from all of them. It is different from the Word Unscrambler, which can return shorter words from a larger pool. Here, a five-letter input returns five-letter results, a six-letter input returns six-letter results, and duplicate letters must match exactly.
Example use cases
- Solve a jumbled word clue where every letter must be used.
- Check whether two words are true anagrams of one another.
- Find alternate words for a puzzle, riddle, or classroom activity.
- Confirm duplicate-letter anagrams such as words with two
es or twols.
Worked example
Input rtaec returns crate, cater, and react because each candidate uses the same five letters once. Input letter only matches words that include two ts and two es, so near matches with missing duplicates are filtered out.
Common mistakes
- Entering a pattern such as
c??t; use Crossword Helper for patterns. - Expecting shorter words from a longer input; use Word Unscrambler for partial words.
- Including extra letters from the clue text instead of only the scrambled letters.
FAQs
- Does this anagram tool use every letter?
- Yes. Results must use all letters exactly once, including repeated letters.
- Can I search a phrase?
- Spaces and punctuation are ignored, so phrase letters are treated as one continuous letter set.
- Why did I get no matches?
- The letters may not form a standard dictionary word of that exact length, or the answer may be a name, abbreviation, or phrase.
- What should I use for partial anagrams?
- Use the Word Unscrambler when you want shorter words that can be made from some of the entered letters.
Results are generated using the word dataset and filtering rules documented in our Data & Methodology guide.
